SEBUYAU: All water supply agencies under the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication (MUT) are on standby to face the possibility of prolonged dry weather.
Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi said agencies such as the Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB), Kuching Water Board, Sibu Water Board, and LAKU Management Sdn Bhd are fully prepared to manage any arising situations.
He emphasised that the ministry’s standard operating procedure (SOP) is to continuously monitor water supply sources to ensure stability.
“MUT, in collaboration with the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), is always ready to provide water supply where needed.
“So far, the situation remains manageable. Our water treatment plants across Sarawak are still able to supply water, unless there are disruptions caused by issues such as pipe leakages 0 either due to third-party damage or aging infrastructure,” he said at a press conference after officiating the ‘Petronas Powering Knowledge: MLNG Bestari Outreach’ Programme at SMK Sebuyau today.
Julaihi also urged the public to use water wisely, and follow conservation advice issued by the authorities.
Earlier, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) reported that four areas in Sarawak – Sibu, Marudi, Telang Usan and Limbang – are currently experiencing alert-level hot weather.
According to MetMalaysia, an alert-level heatwave is declared when the daily maximum temperature in an area reaches between 35 and 37 degrees Celsius for at least three consecutive days.
