BINTULU: A 12-year-old boy was among twelve individuals who suffered burn injuries following a fire at a wood-processing factory at Kemena Industrial Estate, Jalan Kemena here.
The boy, an Indonesian national, was reported to have sustained burns to his legs and hands.
He and other individuals, comprising two locals and the rest Indonesians, had received initial treatment at the scene before being transported to the Bintulu Hospital.
Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak said it received a distress call at 7:30 pm on Friday night, prompting the deployment of personnel from the Bintulu and Kidurong stations.
“Upon arrival, it was found that the fire involved a pile of processed wood that caught fire outside the factory building, covering an estimated area of 80 by 60 square feet.
“Two boilers were completely destroyed in the incident, while approximately 10 per cent of the building structure was also damaged,” it said in a statement on Saturday.
The department added that firefighters used two 200-foot hose lines and four nozzles during the extinguishing operation, drawing water from both the fire engine pumps and nearby hydrants, as well as a water tanker.
A company-owned excavator was also used to help remove smouldering wood debris from the scene.
