SPAOH: Education stands as a powerful tool in combating poverty and paving the way for a brighter future for rural communities, especially in the Spaoh area.

Deputy Premier and Bukit Saban Assemblyman, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, said that building a better future for rural children depends on the joint commitment of the government, educators, parents and the wider community.

He expressed his appreciation to teachers for their high dedication in educating students who recently achieved excellent examination results.

“I would like to thank all the teachers for their extraordinary dedication.

“The success of these students is the result of collective effort and should serve as motivation for future generations,” he said.

He made the remarks during the 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) & Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) Thanksgiving Ceremony held at Dewan Sinaran, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Spaoh, on Friday.

Uggah also urged parents to continue working closely with schools, and stay informed about their children’s education progress to ensure greater continued success.

He further emphasised the Sarawak Government’s commitment under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg in strengthening education as a key strategy in eradicating poverty.

He said one of the major initiatives being planned is to offer free education in Sarawak-owned universities by 2026 in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields for local students.

He added that with the rapid growth of the state’s economy, many high-skilled job opportunities will be available.

It is the government’s hope that Sarawakian youth will be able to seize these opportunities through strong and continuous education.

At the event, Uggah and Betong MP, Datuk Dr Richard Rapu, also announced several contributions to support education development in the area.

Among the contributions announced were RM30,000 from Uggah and RM10,000 from Richard to SMK Spaoh’s Education Fund.

This was followed by a RM70,000 contribution from the Betong MP for the installation of an LED screen at the school.

In addition, Uggah also approved special incentives for outstanding SPM and STPM students, while RM5,000 was contributed for the purchase of a public address system for Dewan Sinaran, SMK Spaoh.
