(Johor, 10th) The Election Commission calls on employers to cooperate with the 16th Johor State Election by allowing registered and eligible employee voters reasonable time to go out and vote, so that they can fulfill their civic duties.

Election Commission Secretary Datuk Khairul Sharil, in a statement released on Thursday (9th), pointed out that they are aware of the public’s concern over employers not allowing them to go out to vote.

"The Election Commission reminds all employers that they must comply with Section 25 of the Election Offences Act 1954 (Act 5), and give employees who are registered voters reasonable time so that they can exercise their voting rights on the 16th Johor State Election polling day (11th)."

"Employers are not allowed to deduct any wages or other remuneration from employees for carrying out their voting responsibilities, nor impose any form of punishment. If any employer directly or indirectly refuses to give employees reasonable time or prevents employees from voting, it is considered an offence. Upon conviction, they can be fined RM5,000 or imprisoned for no more than one year."

The Election Commission hopes all employers will fully cooperate to ensure the smooth running of the 16th Johor State Election’s voting process and to encourage more voters to enthusiastically participate in voting.
