(Maradong, 26th) The Maradong Magistrate’s Court has sentenced two men to five years in prison each after they were found guilty under Section 39C(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, a provision targeting repeat drug offenders.
Maradong District Police Chief, Tan Sri Merlin, stated that the two defendants, aged 28 and 25 respectively, were charged by the local Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department on March 25.
“The case was presided over by Judge Stella Augustine Druce, with Inspector Herry Alban Ali prosecuting.”
He said the court learned that both defendants had previously been convicted more than twice under Section 15(1)(a) of the same law, and were therefore charged this time under Section 39C(1).
He stated that the first defendant had four prior offenses and was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment, two strokes of the cane, and to be under police supervision for two years after release.
“The second defendant had two prior offenses and was sentenced to five years in prison, one stroke of the cane, and two years of police supervision.”
He added that Section 39C(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 provides for a maximum penalty of seven years’ imprisonment and up to three strokes of the cane.
Tan Sri emphasized that the police take a tough stance on drug-related crimes and will firmly address such issues within the community.
He also urged the public to provide leads on drug activities in the area.
