(Bandar Seri Begawan, 12th) The Brunei Department of Labour recently conducted a surprise inspection on an auto repair shop in Kampong Menglait, uncovering that the employer was suspected of violating up to five provisions of the Employment Order (Chapter 278), raising public concern.

The inspection aimed to ensure that private businesses comply with relevant labor regulations and safeguard workers’ rightful interests. According to a statement issued by the Department of Labour, the employer was accused of the following five violations: failure to pay employees overtime wages; arranging for employees to work on designated rest days; not providing paid leave on public holidays; failure to grant paid annual leave; and refusing employees their right to sick leave certified by a doctor.

The Department noted that the case is currently under further investigation. If found guilty, the employer will face a maximum fine of $1,000 for each offense; refusal to pay the fine could result in prosecution.

The Department also took this opportunity to remind all employers nationwide to legally protect employee benefits, including paying reasonable overtime wages, ensuring at least one day off per week, complying with public holiday arrangements, and providing paid annual leave and lawful sick leave.

To enhance legal awareness, the Department of Labour urges employers and employees with inquiries to call 2381848 during office hours, or 7298989 outside office hours for further information.

The Department encourages businesses to maintain continuous self-supervision to ensure full compliance and foster a fair, safe workplace environment.
