KAPIT: The Upper Rajang Development Agency (URDA), under the Regional Corridor Development Authority (RECODA), has officially opened its new regional office in Kapit, marking a significant step in strengthening development coordination across the Upper Rajang region.

The opening was officiated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg following the Sarawak Development Coordination Committee Meeting (SDCCM) on Thursday (Nov 6).

RECODA said the new office will serve as a central hub for planning, stakeholder engagement and implementation of development initiatives within the URDA region.

“This office enhances our ability to coordinate physical and socio-economic development programmes, ensuring inclusive growth for communities in Upper Rajang,” RECODA said in a statement.

To date, RM1.5 billion in alternative funding has been approved for 42 projects under URDA, including road and bridge upgrades, water supply projects, and the ongoing Kapit Master Plan.

URDA has also implemented 24 socio-economic programmes under its COMMUNITY@SCORE initiative, benefiting local entrepreneurs, farmers, and small-scale industries in agriculture, fisheries, and rural enterprise development.

In conjunction with the office launch, the event also marked the rollout of the High Impact Community Project (HICP), a collaboration between RECODA, TERAJU (Unit Peneraju Agenda Bumiputera), and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).

The initiative aims to empower rural and B40 communities through innovation, research-driven enterprise development, and value chain strengthening.

Under this programme, URDA will oversee 60 participants across two project sites, involving a total allocation of RM5.5 million funded by TERAJU, with RECODA as the strategic partner and USM as the implementing agency.

The projects include the Integration of Duck Egg, Banana, and Azolla Farming for 10 participants in Kampung Bukit Goram and Kampung Nanga Yong Ulu, and the Production and Commercialisation of sustainable stingless bee honey (madu kelulut lestari) for 50 participants in Kampung Tatai Mas Raweng and Kampung Selirik, Kapit.

The HICP is part of RECODA’s Socio-Economic Development Plan (SEDP) 2022–2026, which identifies 180 potential development projects in tourism, agriculture and forestry, and SME development to uplift livelihoods and stimulate the rural economy within the SCORE region.
