SHANGHAI: Sarawak is setting its sights on expanding its export footprint in China as five local companies take part in the 8th China International Import Expo and Malaysia International Halal Showcase Shanghai 2025 at the National Exhibition and Convention Centre.

The Malaysia Pavilion, launched on Thursday (Nov 6) by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Sarawak Deputy Premier and Minister of International Trade, Industry and Investment Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, marks Malaysia’s largest-ever participation at CIIE, occupying more than 200,000 square metres and featuring 250 companies.

In a statement, the Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment said Sarawak’s representatives include SPL Food Industries (gula apong products), Iana Corporation (kek lapis), Joyees Trading (pepper products), Nationfood (tempe chips) and PPES Ternak (canned corned beef).

“Their products drew strong interest buyers from China eager for unique and authentic offerings from Borneo,” the statement read.

The ministry also said Malaysia is seeking to strengthen its presence in the Chinese market following a record-breaking year in bilateral ties.

“In 2023, Malaysia-China trade reached USD 106.06 billion, marking 50 years of diplomatic relations and extending China’s position as Malaysia’s largest trading partner for the 16th consecutive year.

“Sarawak’s trade with China stood at RM27.3 billion in 2024, driven by petroleum products, palm oil and chemical exports,” the ministry said.

With rising demand for food and niche products, Sarawak officials said more small and medium enterprises should leverage platforms like MIHAS to reach global buyers.
