Kapit a potentially world-class eco-friendly city with proper planning

KAPIT: This town has the potential to be developed into an eco-friendly city with proper and well-structured planning, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Speaking at the ‘Majlis Merarau Bersama Komuniti Kapit’ event here today, he said the town’s strategic location in the heart of Sarawak’s interior and its early stage of development provide an opportunity for a more systematic and forward-looking growth plan.

“Kapit is different from other towns in Sarawak. I once brought an expert from Norway, Professor Han, who visited Kapit and revealed that the district is very beautiful.

“However, Professor Han suggested that Kapit be developed as a pedestrian city, meaning fewer motor vehicles and more walking instead, because the world today demands greener and more environmentally friendly areas.

“So, since Kapit is still in its early development phase, we can plan it more systematically to make it a world-class eco-friendly city.

“Who knows, one day Kapit could become one of the best cities in the world, as long as we plan from now,” he said.

He also highlighted the global recognition of the Borneo Cultures Museum (BCM) in Kuching, which now ranks among the top museums in the world.

“Who would have thought that BCM is now internationally recognised?

“Previously, I went to the Louvre Museum in Paris to learn when we needed to build a new museum. Now, our museum has become a global reference,” he said.

Abang Johari said with its unique natural environment, Kapit could similarly gain international attention if developed sustainably, which would in turn boost its local economy.

“We must position ourselves so that the world recognises us not only for economic progress but also for how we develop the state through sustainable approaches,” he added.
