KAPIT: The Sarawak government will build the Veteran Housing Project in Bukit Goram here, to provide comfortable and well-equipped homes for military veterans.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the project reflects the government’s appreciation for the service and sacrifices of veterans who have served the nation.
“As mentioned earlier by Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi (federal Works Minister), we truly value the sacrifices and contributions of our veterans.

“Therefore, we are developing the necessary infrastructure for their residential lots.”
Abang Johari said this in his speech during the Majlis Merarau Bersama Komuniti Kapit held at Kapit Civic Centre here on Thursday (Nov 6).
Meanwhile, Nanta, who is also Kapit MP, said the project has been made possible through the Premier’s prompt action and concern regarding a long-standing request from local veterans.
“I’ve been informed that more than RM100 million has been allocated for infrastructure and related works. This project will finally realise a plan that has been delayed for over 30 years.”
He explained that the land for the housing project was originally purchased decades ago by a group of veterans using their own funds, but could not be developed due to financial constraints.
“Many of the original land owners have passed away, but their heirs still remain.”
Nanta revealed that the issue was first raised during the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Convention in February by a representative from Pelagus, who is also the head of the veteran association in Kapit.
“As soon as the matter was raised, the Premier turned to me and said, ‘Alex, we will help.’ That was how quickly he acted,” he said, adding that within two weeks, State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki had gone on-site to inspect the proposed project area.
