(Kuching, 4th) A police officer was sentenced by two separate courts to a total of five years and two weeks’ imprisonment and one stroke of the cane after being absent from duty without reason for five months and illegally possessing a parang.
The accused is Mohd Hastree, a 36-year-old man from Kampung Demak Baru. He pleaded guilty to both charges before Kuching Sessions Court Judge Iris Awen Jon and Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan.
In the Sessions Court, the accused was charged under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958 for possessing a parang without reasonable excuse.

Judge Iris Awen Jon found the accused guilty and sentenced him to five years' imprisonment and one stroke of the cane.
On the other hand, in the Magistrate's Court, the accused was charged with being absent without reasonable excuse from duty as a police officer from May 14 to September 29 this year, an offense under Section 86(1) of the Police Act 1967, and was sentenced accordingly.
Case facts show that on June 9 at 9:30 am, the accused committed this offense at the Commandant’s Office, IPK Sarawak.
Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan sentenced him to two weeks’ imprisonment, with the sentence to commence from yesterday.

According to the summary of events, police discovered that the accused had been absent from his sentry post at the meeting room for 15 consecutive days.
On September 29 at 1:30 pm, police found and arrested the accused in a car near the Kuching District Police Headquarters.
During the vehicle inspection, a parang was found on the back seat, and the accused was unable to give a reasonable explanation for possessing the weapon.

Police subsequently confiscated several items belonging to the accused, including a Proton Gen 2 car, a set of car keys, a parang, police identification, and a pass.
Further investigation revealed that the accused had been absent from duty for five months and had demonstrated a lack of interest and a poor attitude towards police responsibilities.
