(Kuching, 4th) A 36-year-old man was arrested for allegedly attacking a police officer with a cleaver during the Sarawak Regatta 2025.
Kuching District Police Chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu issued a statement yesterday stating that the incident occurred on the evening of November 2 at the Kuching Waterfront.
He said that at the time, a police patrol team was conducting a crime prevention patrol in the area when the suspect suddenly wielded a cleaver and swung it at an on-duty police officer, resulting in a small tear in the left sleeve of the officer’s uniform.
“Fortunately, the officer was not injured,” he said.
The police subsequently subdued and arrested the suspect on the spot. Background checks revealed that the man has two previous convictions.
“Preliminary urine test results showed that the suspect was negative for drugs,” Alexson added.
Police are investigating the case under Section 332 of the Penal Code (voluntarily causing hurt to a public servant in the discharge of his duty). If convicted, the suspect could face up to three years in prison, a fine, or both.
Alexson urged witnesses or those with information to contact the Kuching District Police Control Center (082-244444) or Investigating Officer Insp. Ridzainuddin Rosley (010-9431449) as soon as possible to provide information.
