Surviving Twin Given Priority to Relatives; Welfare Department Seeks Guardian for Baby

(Kuching, 8th) Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri stated that the Social Welfare Department (JKM) is currently conducting an assessment procedure to determine a suitable guardian for the surviving twin baby in the Johor Bahru baby girl death case.

Nancy Shukri pointed out that the matter has been submitted to the court for review to determine an 'Eligible and Suitable Person' (Orang Yang Layak dan Sesuai, OYLS) to serve as the guardian. At the same time, the Welfare Department also has a list of qualified persons being considered to care for the baby.

However, she emphasized that the authorities will give priority to having the baby's relatives assume caregiving responsibility.

'We are still ascertaining who will become the eligible and suitable person (OYLS). In general, priority is given for the child to be cared for by relatives. If that cannot be arranged, the process will be conducted according to established procedures.'

'The Welfare Department does indeed have a list of candidates whom we deem suitable and qualified, but relatives always have priority.'

She made these remarks to the media after attending the 'YKN-PSSS Partnership Program: Caring University Students' (Program Sahabat PSSS YKN: Mahasiswa Prihatin) and 'Green Footprints: Save Our Coasts and Oceans' (Jejak Hijau: Selamatkan Pantai dan Laut Kita) activities at Kampung Trombol.

She was responding to the death case involving a baby girl in Johor Bahru. The case occurred on May 22, where a baby girl allegedly died after being thrown from the 10th floor of a People's Housing Project (PPR) apartment by her mother.

Nancy pointed out that the woman was in her postpartum confinement period at the time, and thus needed support and assistance from all sides in facing such a difficult situation.

She stated that the Welfare Department would also provide counseling services for the woman, as well as deploy officers to the scene to follow up and offer aid.

'We will provide assistance in the form of psychological counselling. This is also our responsibility, and we must obtain professional opinions from doctors regarding the mother's situation and the problems she has experienced.'

She said the Welfare Department will continue to monitor the progress of the case and provide needed assistance based on the results of professional assessment.
