Kenji Wu Clashes with Music Critic, Criticized: 'Pretending in Front of Me'

Published at Feb 09, 2026 05:23 pm
Taiwanese singer Kenji Wu has shifted his career focus to China in recent years, and recently appeared on the music program “YouGe” Season 2, where he made headlines for confronting a judge to defend a collaborating singer.

On the show, judge Liang Yuan commented that the song "Edges" performed by Kenji Wu and Huanzi lacked power, and mocked the two male singers for singing with a “particularly petty and complaining” tone. Unexpectedly, after hearing this, Kenji Wu retorted that Liang Yuan was bringing his emotions into the show, sharply rebuking: "Because you were cyberbullied." He said that music critics shouldn’t just focus on finding singers’ shortcomings, and that they should be like tour guides directing singers, “taking us to experience the world.”

The drama didn’t stop there—Liang Yuan, refusing to back down, angrily posted on Weibo and called out Kenji Wu: "You’re just pretending in front of me." He felt the critique was not just for the sake of show effect, and mentioned that in the Chinese music scene, many musicians stand up for others just for the money. He said he himself was just an ordinary listener, and furiously blasted Kenji Wu: "Your songs are garbage. I’ll say what I want when it comes to me."
