Bangladesh interim government Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has said the country will hold its "best election" in history.
The interim leader met with a delegation of the Bangkok-based Asian Network for Free Elections (ANFREL) in Dhaka on Thursday and assured the visitors that a free and fair election will be held between December 2025 and June 2026.
"We want to make sure the election will be the best in Bangladesh's history and (a) milestone for the country's democratic journey," Yunus said, according to a statement posted on his Facebook page on Saturday.
Yunus, a renowned economist, became the head of Bangladesh's interim government after Sheikh Hasina resigned as premier and fled to India in August last year following a mass student-led uprising against her rule.
She was accused by opposition parties of winning sham elections to remain in power.
Her party, Awami League, in 2011 decided to abolish the requirement for a caretaker government to conduct elections.
She won her fourth consecutive victory in January 2024 after her rivals, including the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), boycotted the election.
The elections in 2014 and 2018 were also one-sided due to widespread crackdown on the opposition and boycott by BNP leader and former prime minister Khaleda Zia.
