Hong Kong Airport Selected as World's Second-Best Airport in 50-60 Million Passenger Category

Hong Kong International Airport has risen to second place in a global ranking. Aviation intelligence agency Aviation A2Z has announced the world’s top 10 best airports for 2025, with Hong Kong International Airport ranking just behind Qatar’s Hamad International Airport in the 50 to 60 million annual passenger traffic category.

Largest Growth in Passenger Throughput Last Year

Aviation A2Z, citing data from the Airport Authority, reported that Hong Kong International Airport handled 54.9 million passengers in the fiscal year ending March 2025, representing a year-on-year growth of 21.6%. Compared to the 53.1 million passengers handled in the full year ending December 2024, this growth continues, and last year’s growth rate of 34.3% was the largest among ranked airports.

The agency pointed out that as Asia’s busiest gateway, Hong Kong International Airport’s “strong local demand and international connectivity make it one of the best performing airports in 2025.” It noted that Hong Kong serves as a primary hub for Cathay Pacific, Hong Kong Airlines, and HK Express, with frequent operations by Chinese airlines and numerous long-haul routes ensuring strong connectivity.

Comparisons within 50 to 60 Million Passenger Category Demonstrate Hub Role

This selection focuses on airports in the 50 to 60 million annual passenger category. Aviation A2Z said these airports strike a balance between size and operational performance and are typical examples of post-pandemic recovery and growth. The agency further explained that the main drivers of growth for these airports include post-COVID recovery and the revival of tourism. These airports are also major aviation hubs, continuously expanding both their international networks and local tourism demand, with Hong Kong, Bangkok, and Seattle standing out in particular.

Qatar Hamad International Ranked First

Among global airports in the same category, Qatar’s Hamad International Airport in Doha secured first place, handling 52.7 million passengers last year—an annual increase of 15%. Aviation A2Z cited its role as the central hub for one of the world’s most extensive airline networks. Indonesia’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta ranked third.
