China and the United States held economic and trade talks on the 28th in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden. According to foreign media reports, the talks ended after five hours and will continue on Tuesday. U.S. President Trump, who is visiting Scotland, stated that he hopes China will open its market.
China-U.S. Economic and Trade Talks Expected to Resume on Tuesday
Foreign media reported that the talks were held in the Rosenbad, the Swedish Prime Minister’s Office, on the afternoon of the 28th local time. U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent led the U.S. negotiation team into the venue, and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng also confirmed his attendance. Negotiators from both sides were photographed leaving at 8 p.m. local time (1 a.m. Tuesday Malaysian time) without answering reporters’ questions. The talks are expected to continue on Tuesday.
At a press conference with UK Prime Minister Starmer in Scotland, Trump mentioned these talks, saying: "I very much hope to see China open its market." He noted that if the U.S. and China fail to reach an agreement, global supply chains could once again be thrown into chaos due to mutual tariffs between the U.S. and China soaring into triple digits, which may lead to a bilateral trade embargo.
U.S. Trade Representative Greer stated before the talks that he did not expect any "major breakthroughs" on the day. He said: "What I expect is to continue monitoring and reviewing the implementation of agreements so far, to ensure the flow of critical rare earth minerals between the two sides, and to lay the foundation for stronger and more balanced trade in the future."
Trade analysts noted that both sides may agree to extend the tariff and export control ceasefire reached in mid-May by another 90 days. This extension would create conditions for a possible meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the end of October or early November.
The Financial Times reported on Monday that the U.S. has suspended restrictions on technology exports to China to avoid disrupting trade talks with Beijing and to facilitate a Trump-Xi meeting later this year.
