Don’t be content with being mere ‘jaguh kampung’, bumi traders told

KAPIT: Local Bumiputera entrepreneurs have been urged to break out of their comfort zones and not remain ‘jaguh kampung’ or local champions.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said they must expand their business networks through various platforms including mass media and social media.

He reminded local entrepreneurs not to stop producing or promoting their products once a carnival ends, but to keep seizing government-provided opportunities.

“Kapit has quality, unique local products with great potential to penetrate wider markets, but entrepreneurs must be exposed and guided to succeed,” he said.

He was officiating at the closing ceremony of the 2025 Kapit Division Entrepreneurs Carnival here yesterday (Jul 10).

The Kapit MP said such platforms are essential to strengthen the local entrepreneurial ecosystem and sustain long-term growth.

He noted that improved road connectivity between Kapit and Sibu has opened more avenues for local businesses to expand their reach.

Nanta expressed support for future carnivals in Kapit and called for more public-private partnership programmes with agencies, businesses and communities.

“This approach is vital to ensure the continuous development of Kapit’s entrepreneurship ecosystem in line with the state’s Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030,” he added.

Meanwhile, when officiating at the the launch ceremony of the ‘proposed riverbank and slope protection works and extension of Kapit Waterfront here earlier, he urged shop or building owners in Kapit to not only maintain but also beautify their premises.

He reminded that many privately-owned and commercial buildings, particularly older ones, have not been repainted for years and are now in a state of neglect.

“Some are even overgrown with weeds and fig trees, which severely tarnish the image of Kapit town, particularly as some of them are located right in the town centre,” he added.

He called on the Kapit District Council (MDK) to take action under its jurisdiction by reminding owners to care for and take responsibility for their properties.

Nanta also appealed for the cooperation of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and MDK councillors to support and help enforce this call.

“This matter must be taken seriously as many quarters, including the public in Kapit, have long voiced their dissatisfaction over the issue, which remains unresolved,” he said.
