(Mataram, 24th) An accident occurred recently on Mount Rinjani in Indonesia's West Nusa Tenggara Province, where a 27-year-old Brazilian female tourist, Juliana, accidentally fell off a cliff while heading to the summit. Indonesia's joint Search and Rescue (SAR) team successfully located the missing person at 7:05 AM (WITA) on June 23 (Monday), and have launched an emergency rescue operation.
The head of the Mataram Rescue Office, Muhammad Haryadi, said in a written statement that the victim was found near the Cemara Nunggal area, about 500 meters away from where she lost her footing. The SAR team used a thermal detection drone for the search, eventually successfully locating the woman.
"From the drone footage, it appears the victim has likely lost consciousness. Because the area where she fell is very steep, with an estimated drop of 400 to 500 meters, we are now expediting coordination for evacuation," he said.
The incident occurred on the morning of June 21 (Saturday), when Juliana was climbing to the summit of Mount Rinjani and unfortunately lost her footing, plunging into a deep ravine. The rescue operation has faced numerous challenges due to steep terrain and thick fog.
The Governor of West Nusa Tenggara Province, Lalu Muhammad Iqbal, is taking the matter very seriously and has instructed all parties to complete the evacuation as quickly as possible.
"This is a race against time. In an emergency, without supplies, the golden survival window is only about 72 hours. We must spare no effort, using any method necessary, to ensure her safe rescue," the governor emphasized.
To speed up the rescue process, the provincial government is also planning to coordinate with PT Amman Mineral Nusa Tenggara (AMNT) company to deploy its helicopter with professional pilots, in order to overcome the extreme terrain constraints.
"If an air evacuation is needed, execute it immediately to avoid missing the golden window for rescue," Iqbal added.
He also reminded that the safety of the rescuers must remain their top priority, ensuring teams are adequately protected during the operation. He noted that this incident serves as a reminder to continue safeguarding tourist safety, in order to maintain West Nusa Tenggara's good reputation as a tourist destination.
"This is not just a rescue mission; it is an embodiment of our sense of host responsibility. The safety of foreign visitors is our unshirkable commitment," he said.
Currently, the rescue teams remain hard at work in the area and are hoping to send the victim to a medical facility for treatment as soon as possible.
