Female Tourist Falls into Active Volcano, Treacherous Terrain Hampers Rescue Efforts

A Brazilian female tourist visiting Indonesia's Lombok island active volcano Mount Rinjani fell by accident on the 21st, and rescue teams have launched a search and rescue operation.

According to The Sun, 26-year-old Juliana fell on the morning of the 21st while climbing Mount Rinjani with a hiking group. When reaching the trail overlooking the volcanic crater lake, the guide noticed Juliana appeared fatigued and suggested a short break, then proceeded to lead the group to the summit. However, when the guide returned with the group, Juliana was nowhere to be found.

Police stated that they received an emergency call at 2:32 p.m. on the 21st and immediately dispatched rescue personnel to the scene to begin a search. Subsequent footage from rescue drones showed that Juliana appeared to have tumbled nearly 1,000 feet down the volcanic canyon, becoming stuck in dangerous terrain. In the footage, Juliana looked exhausted, sitting alone in the volcanic pit waiting for help.

The East Lombok police spokesperson stated that the guide confirmed multiple times that Juliana remained safely at the original spot before leaving, but upon return, found that Juliana was missing, suspecting she might have slipped and fallen into the volcanic pit.

Since then, rescuers have been making efforts for several days, deploying drones and sending multiple teams rappelling from different angles to search and try to bring Juliana out of danger.

But the rescue process has not gone smoothly. According to the Mount Rinjani National Park office, although the rescue team has rappelled more than 300 meters, dense fog and cold weather have interfered, and they have yet to physically reach Juliana. Subsequent drone footage again spotted her, but found she was no longer in her original location, possibly due to moving herself or being displaced by weather conditions.

Juliana's sister, Mariana, pointed out that Juliana has not yet received any water, food, or warm clothing. Rescue efforts are severely hampered by insufficient rope length and extremely poor visibility.

Reports say this trip was part of Juliana’s solo journey across Asia. She had already visited countries like Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines, documenting her travels on social media. The climbing trip was meant to be just another highlight, but unexpectedly, Juliana ended up in distress.

The Brazilian Foreign Ministry stated that the embassy in Jakarta is now involved and has appointed representatives to monitor the local rescue efforts. Indonesian authorities said the rescue operation continues to expand, deploying more personnel and drones to search from various directions and vowing to find and rescue the trapped woman as soon as possible.
