【Japan General Election】LDP Wins Big; Scholar: Xi Jinping Foolishly Awakens the Yamato Spirit

In Japan's House of Representatives election on the 8th, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s Liberal Democratic Party secured 316 out of 465 seats, surpassing the two-thirds majority on its own and achieving the threshold to amend the constitution single-handedly. The election results indicate that Japan will move toward a pro-U.S., anti-China, and Taiwan-aligned course. Tung Li-wen, Executive Director of the Asia-Pacific Peace Research Foundation, analyzed on the 9th that, "Xi Jinping has foolishly and perfectly awakened the Yamato spirit."

According to aggregated Taiwanese media reports, Taiwan's National Policy Research Institute held a seminar on the 9th titled "The Results and Impact of Japan's House of Representatives Election", inviting several scholars and experts to discuss.

Tung Li-wen analyzed that the changes in Japan's political landscape once again prove that a strategically vague and centrist policy line has no room for survival. Only by choosing a strategically clear and resolute policy line can a country meet the demands of voters and the international community for national survival and development.

Tung further pointed out that Takaichi's sweeping victory heralds a future in which Japan will embark on a path of national strength, pro-U.S., anti-China, and Taiwan alignment, "and there is no turning back." Takaichi alone saved the entire party; in the future, the LDP will become "Takaichified," and opposition parties in Japan will also tend to follow a Takaichi path, just as how U.S. President Trump affected American political trajectories.

On Japan–China relations, Tung emphasized that Chinese President "Xi Jinping foolishly and perfectly awakened the Yamato spirit." Last November, Takaichi stated in parliament that "if Taiwan is in trouble, Japan is in trouble" and asserted she would never back down. China then launched a series of hybrid attacks on Japan, mirroring the blows that Taiwan has suffered in recent years and letting Takaichi’s government experience them firsthand.

Tung believes that China’s objective is to isolate Japan internationally and to isolate Takaichi within Japan, coordinating efforts to paralyze and bring down her government within two years to intimidate and control Japanese politicians. But these attacks backfired; Takaichi showcased flexible diplomatic skills, her poll numbers soared to record highs, and she became a national icon.
