Iranian Nobel Peace Prize Winner Mohammadi Sentenced to Seven and a Half Years in Prison

The lawyer of Iranian women's rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mohammadi told AFP on the 8th that Mohammadi was sentenced to six years in prison for 'assembly and conspiracy to commit crimes', and also banned from leaving the country for two years.

The lawyer pointed out that in another case, she was also sentenced to one and a half years in prison for 'engaging in propaganda activities', and exiled for two years to serve her sentence in Khusf city, eastern South Khorasan province. According to Iranian law, multiple prison sentences are not served cumulatively.

Mohammadi's 'Narges Foundation' stated that Mohammadi refused to defend herself in court and remained silent at the sentencing on the 7th.

The foundation said Mohammadi had held a week-long hunger strike, which ended on the 8th.

Mohammadi was arrested on December 12, 2025. Prosecutor Hemmati-Far accused Mohammadi of making provocative speeches and inciting those present to shout illegal slogans and disrupt social order at the memorial service for the late human rights lawyer Ali Kordi in Mashhad, northeastern Iran.

Mohammadi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023, by which time she was already imprisoned for her long-term advocacy of women's rights and for the abolition of the death penalty in Iran.

Over the past ten years or so, she has spent most of her time in prison.
