Indonesian police stated on the 8th that the eruption of Dukono Volcano in North Maluku Province, Indonesia has resulted in the deaths of 3 hikers, 2 of whom are foreigners.
The police told 'Kompas' that another 10 people are missing in the area.
Earlier that day, Indonesia's search and rescue agency said that rescue personnel were working to save about 20 hikers trapped by the volcanic eruption. Among them, 9 are from Singapore.
The area has been closed to tourists since April 17, when scientists observed intensified volcanic activity.
The Dukono Volcano erupted at around 7:40 a.m. local time on the 8th, sending an ash column up to about 10 kilometers high. The local search and rescue agency has advised surrounding residents not to enter the area within 4 kilometers of the crater, and warned that rain could trigger volcanic mudslides.
