On the 26th, U.S. President Trump posted on social media, threatening to impose a 100% retaliatory tariff on European countries that levy digital services taxes on American companies.
He pointed out that if the relevant digital services taxes are implemented, retaliatory tariffs will be imposed immediately.
He stated that many European countries are discussing plans to tax U.S. companies with a digital services tax, and some countries may begin imposing the tax soon.
Trump said that any country imposing such a digital services tax would immediately face a 100% tariff on all their exports to the U.S. This tariff would replace the trade agreements between the U.S. and those countries, regardless of whether those agreements had already been signed or implemented.
In recent years, several European countries have actively promoted the imposition of digital services taxes on the business activities of technology companies such as Google, Amazon, and Apple within their borders, drawing strong opposition from the U.S. Earlier this year, Trump repeatedly threatened tariff retaliation against France and the UK.
French President Macron previously stated that France would not yield to American threats and would not cancel its digital tax on U.S. tech giants.
