17-year-old son’s looks criticized by netizens; Matilda Tao declares: 'I won’t let this go lightly'

Matilda Tao recently appeared with her 17-year-old son Lee Wu in an interview, but netizens criticized his appearance, saying he loses to his father, Lee Lee-jen. In response, Matilda Tao fired back at the trolls, admitting that she has never been associated with being 'pretty' since childhood, but has always strived to be confident. She expressed confusion over why, even after turning 50, she still has to face judgment about her looks.

After the exclusive interview video was released, many netizens commented that Lee Wu looks like his father, Lee Lee-jen, and is handsome. However, some shared the news and mocked: “I actually think the mother’s genes are too strong… the father’s handsomeness completely beats the son’s…” Matilda Tao admitted she was concerned her son would be hurt, so she decided to speak out: “We know exactly what our family looks like. Expecting kindness from others may be naive on my part, but I didn’t expect that, even at my age, I’d still be criticized for appearance, and that a lifetime of effort can’t compete with some people’s superficial worship.”
She also revealed that she has never been associated with 'pretty' since childhood, but has always tried to live confidently. “I don’t know why, now, I am being trampled on… Even though books often tell us not to judge people by their looks, there are still many who worship at the altar of appearance, as if nothing else matters.”

Matilda Tao lamented that despite working hard for most of her life, she still can’t overcome some people’s superficial values. She emphasized that her family knows very well what they look like; although expecting kindness from the outside world may be naive, she didn’t expect that, at her age, she still has to keep facing judgment about looks. “All I can do, when my children feel anxious about their appearance, is try my best to help them believe there are many more meaningful things in the world to pursue.”

She mentioned that her son has no intention of entering showbiz, and facing netizens’ unprovoked attacks on a minor, Matilda Tao firmly declared: “I won’t let this go easily this time.” She admitted she can accept criticism directed at herself, but can’t tolerate it when it’s aimed at her underage child: “There are so many standards of beauty, not just one single standard. Just look at the Hollywood red carpet—you can discuss fashion, but you don’t see personal attacks about height or weight, especially not towards minors.”
