Sports brand Adidas recently collaborated with Britain's Liberty London to launch a co-branded women's quilted jacket, available in markets such as Japan. The design features a bright red base with blue and white floral patterns, made from recycled polyester, and is priced at 1,293 yuan (about 767 Malaysian ringgit) on China's Tmall platform. However, the design has drawn mockery from many netizens, who say it strongly resembles the traditional “floral cotton padded jacket” from northeastern China. Some jokingly exclaimed, “My grandma has the exact same one.”
According to the Yangcheng Evening News, this set pairs shorts with the jacket and uses quilted cotton techniques, aiming to fuse retro aesthetics with a sporty, casual style. Adidas claims this is the brand's bold attempt at walking the line between “retro revival” and “sports leisure,” by deconstructing and reconstructing traditional elements to create items that are both warm and fashionable.
However, many consumers expressed their “difficulty in commenting” on the design, sparking heated discussions on social media. Some netizens, upon seeing the price, exclaimed “You can't ask for more than 89 yuan at the farmers’ market,” while others quipped, “Is Adidas targeting my grandma's pension?”; still others humorously imagined, “Put it on and you can go straight to the heated bed, crack sunflower seeds, and chat with family,” dubbing it “Northeast style” design.
Despite this, some netizens said, “I don't understand, but I respect it,” believing that this clash between fashion and “rustic style” has successfully generated widespread discussion, and also demonstrates the brand's innovative attempt at style fusion.
It is reported that the series is sold through Tmall Global’s self-operated channel and is shipped directly from Japan, while Adidas’ official Tmall flagship store has not listed it.
