Zhao Junwen: Media is the Fourth Pillar of Democracy; Hopes to Continue Working Together to Convey Public Voices and Promote Governance

(Miri, 12th) Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture and Member of Parliament for Miri, Lawyer Zhao Junwen stated that the media plays an extremely important role in national development. It is the “fourth pillar” of democracy, supervising and putting pressure on the government so that its policies are more in line with public opinion and that correct decisions are made.

He made these remarks while delivering a speech last night at the “Chinese New Year and Hari Raya Double Celebration Dinner” organized by the Northern Sarawak Journalists Association.

He said that the media does not only bear the responsibility of disseminating information but, similar to Members of Parliament, also voices the concerns of the people and puts appropriate pressure on the government to promote good governance. “The role of the media is similar to that of Members of Parliament: both bring the voices of the people to light and supervise the government’s performance.”

Zhao Junwen pointed out that as times change, the political landscape has also evolved, and the government must pay more attention to and obtain support from all parties when formulating policies. He also shared the transformation of his own role in politics—from conveying public opinion and sometimes making criticisms in the past, to now participating in policy making within the system—which has given him a deeper appreciation of the importance of communication and consultation with various sectors.

He said that policy formulation cannot stop at the office level but must be achieved through exchanges with all walks of life and a deep understanding of real grassroots problems, only then can practical and feasible policies be formulated. “Only through continuous communication can we truly grasp the issues that people care about and effectively resolve them.”

He also mentioned that the media plays a key role in this process as well, helping the government identify issues that concern the public through reporting and questioning, thus further improving policy implementation efficiency. He admitted that sometimes, when facing media inquiries, he also needs to check information further to ensure he provides the public with correct responses.

Zhao Junwen thanked the media for their long-term cooperation and supervision, and hopes to maintain a good working relationship in the future, jointly promoting social progress. “As public servants, we must understand the needs of the people in order to serve society better.”
