Chua Chuan Jin: The AI Era Requires Professional Media Even More—Media Must Uphold Responsibility to Convey Truth

(Miri, 12th) Northern Sarawak Journalists Association President Chua Chuan Jin stated that in an era where artificial intelligence and social media are rapidly developing, the role of professional media has become even more important and must continue to serve as a reliable and ethical source of information.

He made these remarks in his speech at the “Chinese New Year & Hari Raya Double Celebration and Media Night” dinner, noting that the event not only brought together media colleagues, but also showcased the spirit of multicultural unity.

He said that this event was mainly sponsored by Miri MP and Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Teo Chiew Yen, reflecting the support and importance given to the media industry.

This is also the second Media Night held since Teo Chiew Yen was appointed as an MP, and now, he continues to support media activities in his capacity as Deputy Minister, making it even more significant.

He pointed out that Media Night provides a good platform for busy media professionals to network, strengthen professional connections and cooperation in a relaxed atmosphere, and promote communication and unity within the industry.

He thanked the NSJA organizing committee members for their hard work, ensuring the smooth running of the event, and expressed gratitude to the main sponsor for sponsoring the dinner, lucky draw, and best costume awards, believing this showed care for the Miri and Sarawak media community.

Chua Chuan Jin pointed out that Teo Chiew Yen has continuously supported the association’s activities in recent years, including organizing media visits to the Malaysian Parliament. In 2024 and last year, two groups of media members were arranged to participate, and the event will continue this year. He called on members who have not yet participated to register enthusiastically and seize the opportunity.

In addition, he also thanked Teo Chiew Yen for supporting the association’s “Ghost Net” cleanup activities, showing commitment to marine ecological protection.

When discussing the challenges faced by the media industry, he said that as artificial intelligence and social media rapidly develop, information dissemination has become faster yet more complex, making it easier for incorrect or unverified information to spread. In such an environment, professional journalists play a key role in delivering accurate information.

He stated that media play an essential role in connecting society and transmitting information. There must be continuous support, including providing training opportunities, improving skills, and strengthening welfare protections for media personnel to ensure that the news industry continues to maintain credibility and influence in the digital age.

He also hopes that in future, there can be close cooperation with the government and relevant agencies, and he looks forward to Teo Chiew Yen’s continued support for the association’s development, especially in promoting tourism and cultural publicity, to strengthen the media’s performance in promoting Sarawak.

In his speech, he wished all attendees a happy Chinese New Year and Hari Raya, and hoped the event would become a wonderful memory for media professionals to interact and bond.
