Focus on unity and nation-building, avoid excessive politicking

KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg called on the people to focus on nation-building instead of excessive politicking to ensure long-term stability and progress.

He said Sarawak’s steady political climate was the result of a government that prioritises developing its people rather than engaging in political disputes.

“Don’t over-politicise things. Build up the people, and thank God, in Sarawak, we are developing our people. Our politics are stable,” he said when addressing delegates at the 6th Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) Triennial Delegates Conference (TDC) at Riverside Majestic Hotel here today.

Abang Johari said the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government remains committed to protecting Sarawak’s rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63)

“Now we are very stable, and we exercise the power given by the people to protect Sarawakians within the Federation of Malaysia under MA63. We want to protect our rights under MA63.

“But the GPS component parties, PRS, Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), Progressive Democratic Party (PDP), and Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP), must stay strong together,” he added.

He reminded members that political unity was crucial as “pecah perintah” tactics were still being used to weaken Sarawak’s strength and autonomy.

“We must not be divided. We are the ones governing according to Sarawak’s situation. In this context, we must have a united GPS party.

“I can be your Premier now, but when the time comes, we say goodbye. We grow older; you cannot go against age, even if the heart feels young. When the time comes, we pass the torch, to groom and sustain Sarawak’s united culture,” he said.

Abang Johari also commended outgoing PRS President, Datuk Seri Joseph Salang Gandum, for giving way to younger leaders, saying that leadership renewal was essential to preserve Sarawak’s united political culture.

The Premier said Sarawak’s stable administration had allowed it to advance economically and gain recognition as a regional leader in renewable energy and green growth.

“Otherwise, the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, would not have asked us to be the prime mover in ASEAN’s green power transition,” he said.

Meanwhile, when met by reporters later, Abang Johari said the state government would take into account PRS’ call for at least one female representative in the next state election.

“In the spirit of GPS, they have requested to increase female representation, and they will indeed propose it,” he said.

He added that GPS’ policy was to give more space and opportunities to women to enhance their participation in leadership and decision-making roles.

“Our policy within GPS is also to give more space and opportunities to women, to increase their representation,” he said.
