Published at Feb 09, 2026 10:19 am
(Kuching, 9th)—The Sarawak Branch of the Language and Literature Bureau is actively promoting the retranslation and republication of books originally published by the Borneo Literature Bureau, translating them into Malay in order to preserve and pass on Sarawak’s precious literary heritage.
Dr. Azur Ismail, Director of the Sarawak branch of the Language and Literature Bureau, stated that this initiative is part of the bureau’s broader plan to expand multi-ethnic literary publication in Sarawak, while also preserving the state’s rich literary traditions.
He said: “Through recently held workshops, we are dedicated to preserving and protecting Sarawak’s folk literature heritage. Books currently being translated and organized include ‘Keling Nyumpit’, ‘Dilah Tanah’, ‘Pong Kapong’, ‘Adi Pau’ and ‘Jengkuan Taju Remaung’.”

He added that the Sarawak Language Bureau is also involved in the Iban language textbook workshop organized by the bureau.
Azur also hopes that relevant authorities will support the Sarawak Language Bureau's efforts in preserving local literary works, and is willing to engage in discussions through associations or organizations to ensure that this cultural heritage is continually safeguarded.
Therefore, the Sarawak Language Bureau calls on the heirs of the original authors of the above-mentioned books to contact the bureau via email at stephanie@dbp.gov.my or jhayssy@dbp.gov.my.
