(Miri, 9th) The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency’s Miri Maritime Zone yesterday detained a foreign cargo ship during a joint operation codenamed “PERMAI 01/19”, “Tiris 3.0”, and “Pelantar Merah 3/2023”, as the vessel failed to comply with multiple documentation and safety equipment regulations, and was taken back for investigation in accordance with the law.
Miri Maritime Zone Director, Maritime Mohamad Khairul Anuar, pointed out that at 11:32 am, enforcement officers intercepted the vessel approximately 3.8 nautical miles northwest of Kuala Baram. Upon inspection, it was found that the ship could not present valid vessel registration documents, its domestic shipping license had expired, and the life raft safety equipment had exceeded its service period, violating the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952.

He said that there were a total of 9 crew members on board, including 8 Bangladeshis and 1 Chinese national. The cargo ship and all crew members involved were escorted at 2 pm to a designated anchorage in Miri waters to assist in further investigations.
Khairul Anuar emphasized that the maritime enforcement agency will continue to strengthen patrols and enforcement actions, cracking down strictly on any acts that violate navigation regulations within Malaysia's waters.
“All vessels operating in our waters must strictly comply with relevant laws and safety standards. Any negligence or violation not only endangers navigation safety but also threatens the tranquility of our national waters.”
He also urged the public that if they discover any suspicious activity at sea, they may contact the Miri Maritime Zone Operations Center (085-649111), Sarawak State Operations Center (082-432544 / 082-432016), or dial 999 to provide information so the authorities can take prompt action.
