US Reportedly Lowers Tariffs on Taiwan to 15%; TSMC Required to Add 5 More Plants

US media reports indicate that the US-Taiwan tariff negotiations are about to reach an agreement, with the framework expected to be announced within this month. The terms include lowering tariffs from the original 20% to 15% and requiring TSMC to add five more factories in Arizona.

The New York Times on the 12th cited three sources familiar with the matter, reporting this information. If true, this rate would be the same as those agreed upon between the US and Japan and South Korea. Japan and South Korea reached tariff agreements with the US last year.

Bloomberg cited a source familiar with the matter as saying that the US-Taiwan tariff negotiations are in their final stages and an agreement is imminent, though no specific details were provided.

The White House, Office of the US Trade Representative, and Department of Commerce all did not immediately respond to Bloomberg’s request for comment. Taiwan’s representative office in the US declined to comment on the news.

A TSMC spokesperson declined to comment when approached by United Daily News.
