Venezuelan Interior Minister: Reopening Venezuela-US Embassies Aims to Ensure Safety of Maduro and His Wife

Venezuelan Interior Minister Néstor Reverol stated on the 12th that the main purpose of promoting the reopening of embassies between Venezuela and the United States is to guarantee the safety of Venezuelan President Maduro and his wife.

At a press conference held by the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela, he said that reopening the Venezuelan embassy in the United States and the US embassy in Venezuela would help restore the normal operations of both sides' consular institutions, thereby providing the necessary consular protection and support for Maduro and his wife, who are currently in the United States.

He emphasized that the main purpose of reopening the embassies is for the consular institutions to pay attention to and guarantee the health and condition of Maduro and his wife, while also promoting further development of US-Venezuela relations.

On the 3rd, the United States launched a large-scale military operation against Venezuela, forcibly taking control of Maduro and his wife and bringing them to the United States, where they are being held in a detention center in New York. On the 5th, the Maduro couple appeared in a federal court in New York, denying all so-called "criminal" charges made by the US side.

After Trump recognized then Venezuelan opposition leader Guaidó as the country's leader during his first term in 2019, the Maduro government immediately severed diplomatic relations with the United States.

The United States withdrew diplomats from its embassy in Caracas and suspended the operation of the embassy.
