Chinese celebrity couple Sun Li and Deng Chao dubbed the voices for the married protagonists Neytiri and Jake in ‘Avatar 3.’ Last night, director James Cameron and lead actress Zoe Saldaña attended the premiere in the South China Sea. Interestingly, as Deng Chao walked the red carpet with his wife Sun Li, he couldn’t resist trying to steal a kiss from her while admiring her deep V gown. However, his attempt was not successful; Sun Li responded calmly with a smile, while Deng Chao was amused by his own failed sneak attack and burst into laughter.
During the premiere, Deng Chao wanted to share his feelings about working on the voice dubbing but was worried about spoilers, repeatedly saying, “No spoilers.” His wife Sun Li humorously chimed in, “We're playing a married couple, but whether their relationship is good or not? (In this respect) It’s different.” Director Cameron joked, “You two don’t fight nearly as much as Jake and Neytiri,” prompting laughter all around.
Sun Li shared that her approach to voice dubbing is immersive; she cried along with her character, and during fight scenes, she even acted them out in the recording studio by hitting herself. Director Cameron praised the couple’s Mandarin dub, saying, “Both of you captured the soul of the characters.”
Sun Li recounted that she went to see ‘Avatar 1’ with her mom, as Deng Chao was filming and couldn’t join. For ‘Avatar 2,’ she took their children along, during the pandemic period. Now for the third film, she finally got to sit down and chat with her ‘dream director,’ James Cameron, and participate in the movie: “I feel extremely, extremely fortunate, and I’m very happy to be able to bring this film to life with my voice.”
