Miri Airport Allocation Increased to RM445 Million; Hii Khun Yang Hopes for More International Direct Flights

(Miri, 11th) The federal government has officially announced the increase of the allocation for the Miri Airport upgrading project from the original RM150 million to RM445 million. In response, Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Youth Central Deputy Chief Hii Khun Yang said this is a significant milestone in Miri’s development and great news that excites the people of Miri.

He said this announcement means Miri Airport will undergo a more comprehensive upgrade, with the airport’s annual passenger capacity doubling from the current two million to four million, enabling the airport to serve more flights and passengers in the future.

Hii Khun Yang, who is also the Youth Chief of the SUPP Pujut Branch, pointed out that this is a blessing for the people of Miri and a result of years of active lobbying by Miri’s leaders to the federal government—once again proving Sarawak’s important position in the federation and the urgent need for Sarawak’s development.

He said the people of Miri are grateful to the federal government for increasing the allocation and hope that the federal government will continue to pay attention to Sarawak’s needs in the future, including providing more funding and support in the fields of healthcare and education.

He also expressed his gratitude to the leaders of Miri, the Sarawak Ministry of Transport, the Sarawak government, and the federal government for their efforts in advancing the Miri Airport upgrading project.

Hii Khun Yang hopes that as the airport upgrade gets underway, more facilities can be added to benefit travelers, provide better quality services, and ensure a more comfortable waiting environment for passengers, while also boosting the development of Miri’s tourism industry.

In addition, he suggested improvements to the airport parking facilities to facilitate short-term travelers and to strengthen public transportation connections to the airport.

He said that Miri has always been one of the busier airports in the country, connecting Sarawak’s domestic and external flights and handling many rural routes, which has long limited flight increases.

He hopes that after the airport upgrade is completed, the number of flights at Miri Airport will increase accordingly, especially international direct flights.

“Miri is located in the heart of Borneo, making it an ideal hub for international flight connections and an important transit point.”

He said that the announcement of increased allocation comes at an opportune time following the launch of Borneo Airways, making it another major favorable development and one that is believed will help the Sarawak government in planning the future blueprint for Borneo Airways.

He hopes that the relevant allocation and works can be implemented as soon as possible to resolve the longstanding issue of Miri Airport operating over its capacity.

Hii Khun Yang emphasized that the unity of the people remains most important. The rapid growth and increased attention Sarawak is receiving now from the federal government is the direct result of the unity and solidarity of Sarawakians.

“Only under stable politics and the governance of GPS can Sarawak continue to develop swiftly and steadily.”
