(Putrajaya, 13th) Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar said that our country's education system places too much emphasis on the teaching of knowledge, but neglects the instruction of values, morals, and ethics, resulting in shortcomings.
He said at the monthly assembly in the Prime Minister's Department that this flaw is one of the reasons for the occurrence of immoral behavior in schools, including the recently reported bullying and sexual assault cases.
"I had just announced anti-bullying on Friday, yet a school rape incident has occurred!"
"I emphasize that the problem of bullying lies in education; education stresses knowledge but neglects the principles of values, morals, and ethics. That is where the flaw lies."
He believes that when immoral behavior by students occurs at school, responsibility cannot be placed solely on teachers—parents should also bear responsibility.
Anwar hopes that educational institutions, parents, and society can work together to improve the flaws in the education system in order to nurture the next generation with both knowledge and character.
"I hope everyone can do better for families, society, and the country."
Last Friday, Anwar said during the presentation of the 2026 Budget that the Anti-Bullying Bill 2025 would be tabled in this session, and that relevant departments and agencies would implement various measures to prevent bullying in schools.
Melaka Police Chief Datuk Zulkifli said in a statement yesterday that four Form Five male students were suspected of sexually assaulting a Form Three female student at a school in Alor Gajah on the 2nd of this month. They have been remanded for six days to assist with investigations.
He said the police are investigating the case under Section 375B of the Penal Code (gang rape).
