(Kuching, 11th) Sarawak Deputy Premier Dr. Sim Kui Hian stated that the Sarawak government has allocated RM19 million from 2021 to 2025 to carry out more than 650 upgrade and infrastructure enhancement projects for mission schools throughout Sarawak.
According to Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) reports, he pointed out that the state government, through various mechanisms including the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor), has invested hundreds of millions of ringgits in supporting religious development projects, with Christian communities being one of the main beneficiaries, covering thousands of improvement initiatives statewide.
He said this reflects the Sarawak government's steadfast commitment to the principles of inclusivity and religious harmony.
He said, “Religious venues are not just ordinary buildings; they are centers for nurturing values, unity, and community wellbeing. This is the real strength of Sarawak.”
Sim Kui Hian made these remarks while attending the Christmas Day Celebration Dinner last night.
He also emphasized that churches and Christian missionaries have played an important role in the history of education development in Sarawak, especially for their contributions in establishing mission schools.
He said, “Mission schools not only impart knowledge but also shape discipline, humanistic values, and leadership. In fact, most of Sarawak’s current leaders are a result of this education system.”
He further pointed out that the Christian community is the largest religious group in Sarawak, with over 1.2 million believers and more than 2,300 churches, spanning various denominations, reflecting Sarawak’s strong social structure based on multicultural inclusivity.
Dignitaries present included Sarawak Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Wan Junaidi and his wife Datuk Patinggi Faziah Mohd Sanusi.
Also in attendance were Deputy Premier’s wife Datin Amar Enn Ong Seok Ean, Unifor Director Datu Georgina Apphia Ngau, Association of Churches in Sarawak President Bishop Donald Jute, and many other distinguished guests.
