(United States, 7th) White House sources have disclosed that US President Trump may visit South Korea in October to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders' Summit, during which a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping could take place. If true, this would mean the first 'Xi-Trump meeting' since Trump's return to the White House in January this year would be held in South Korea.
The APEC summit will take place from October 31 to November 1 in Gyeongju, South Korea.
CNN reported on Sunday (September 7), citing three Trump administration officials, that Trump and his core advisors are quietly preparing for an October visit to South Korea.
This summit is seen as a significant opportunity for Trump and Xi Jinping to meet. White House officials stated that both sides have conducted serious discussions about holding a bilateral meeting during the APEC summit, but there are currently no concrete plans. Last month, Xi invited Trump and his wife to visit China over the phone, and the US President accepted the invitation, but no specific date has been set.
The report also pointed out that Trump may meet with North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un, but it is not yet clear whether the North Korean leader will attend the summit.
At the military parade in China on Wednesday (the 3rd) commemorating the 80th anniversary of the victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the leaders of China, Russia, and North Korea watched the parade together in Tiananmen Square, creating a historic group image and causing another subtle shift in China-US relations.
On the same day, Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social, wishing Chinese President Xi Jinping and the Chinese people a grand celebration day, but then remarked: "While you are conspiring against the United States, please give my warmest regards to Putin and Kim Jong-un."
US President Trump also told reporters in the Oval Office at the White House on Wednesday that he watched the parade: "I thought it was a wonderful ceremony, very, very impressive."
However, he expressed dissatisfaction that the United States has not received the recognition it deserves for helping China gain freedom, and urged Beijing to remember and honor America's support for China during World War II.
Trump said: "I watched the speech last night. President Xi is my friend, but I think last night's speech should have mentioned the United States, because we provided great help to China."
In response to Trump's accusation that the leaders of China, Russia, and North Korea are 'conspiring against the United States,' Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said at a regular press conference on Thursday (September 4), that China's development of diplomatic relations with any country is never targeted at a third party.
