(Brazil, 7th) A 48-year-old father took his 13-year-old son into the forests of Brazil to undergo a 'digital detox', attempting to imitate the American Discovery Channel reality show 'Naked and Afraid', by surviving without food, water, or any supplies. However, just six days later, the two were found by the police. The son was referred to a child and youth care institution, while the father could face up to one year in prison.
According to foreign media reports, 48-year-old Mark Rogers and his 13-year-old son are both from California, USA, but have been living in Brazil for six years. In order to overcome his son's internet addiction, Mark took his son into the forest of Balneário Camboriú in the south of Brazil, intending to survive in the wild for 21 days.
However, after only six days, the father and son were reported missing on August 28. The son had been absent from school for several days, prompting a large-scale search by local police, who posted missing person notices and used drones. At a construction site, they found the pair's two mobile phones, and nearby, a Jeep with US license plates. At their home, authorities also found two hungry cats.
Authorities stated that Rogers hoped to get away from the influence of phones and television and spend time with his son, but he did not notify anyone before setting out, which caused alarm.
The father and son were eventually found in a remote area of the forest. Both were in poor condition, with police saying they were 'very hungry and thirsty.' After their rescue, they immediately ate large pieces of cake and bread, were visibly exhausted, and had not bathed for several days.
Currently, the father is facing criminal charges and could face up to one year in prison if convicted. As for the son, he has been referred to a child and youth care institution.
