(Taiwan, 7th) — Warships from Canada and Australia sailed into the Taiwan Strait and were criticized by the Chinese military for "provocation and harassment," saying the two countries are sending the wrong signals and increasing security risks.
The Eastern Theater Command of the People’s Liberation Army posted on Weibo on the 6th, stating that the Canadian frigate HMCS Quebec and the Australian destroyer HMAS Brisbane transited the Taiwan Strait on that day and engaged in provocative acts.
According to Taiwanese media reports, the Canadian and Australian warships departed Subic Bay, a former US military base in the Philippines, on the 2nd. They chose to sail east of the median line of the Taiwan Strait, deliberately avoiding waters claimed as territorial sea by mainland China. However, as they transited the Taiwan Strait from south to north, the Chinese navy and coast guard conducted sea and air activities in the relevant waters.
The report stated that a Z-10 attack helicopter that took off from Quanzhou, Fujian, approached the sailing route of the Australian warship at an altitude of over 5,000 feet, west of the Taiwan Strait median line, and subsequently, another Z-10 attack helicopter approached the strait’s median line.
In addition, Chinese mainland coast guard vessel 2204 was reported to have sailed in the waters southwest of Penghu and at one point approached the Canadian and Australian warships. At the same time, another unidentified Taiwanese government vessel approached 2204, monitoring the movements of the mainland coast guard vessel.
