(Miri, 1st) Over 30 ethnic associations will take to the streets of Miri to participate in the "Taste of Borneo Cultural Carnival 4.0". The organizers hope to set a national record for the largest number of ethnic community organizations participating in a parade, to be included in the Malaysia Book of Records.
This record-setting attempt will be the highlight of the 12-day carnival’s opening ceremony. The carnival will take place from July 1st to 12th at the outdoor parking lot of Bintang Megamall in Miri.
This year's carnival is organized by the Sarawak Chinese Association, and co-organized by the Miri City Council and Miri Divisional Office. The event brings together 22 community and cultural groups to celebrate Borneo's rich multicultural heritage and to promote cultural exchange and understanding between different ethnicities.
The organizers anticipate that more than 32 ethnic and community organizations will join the parade, along with delegations from Miri Chung Hwa High School, Marudi Secondary School, Bekenu Secondary School, and Lan Luo Secondary School.
Additionally, a cultural delegation from Yunnan, China will participate, adding an international flair to the event.
The parade will start at 6 p.m., with a route circling the Bintang commercial area, passing through the artificial lake leisure park, and returning to the carnival venue.
To facilitate the parade, the relevant road sections will be temporarily closed from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Authorities advise motorists to plan their journeys in advance to avoid traffic congestion.
In addition to the record attempt, the "Taste of Borneo Cultural Carnival" has prepared a series of exciting activities to fully showcase the multicultural charm of Sarawak and the entire Borneo region.
During the carnival, there will be over 150 food stalls on site offering a variety of local delicacies.
Every evening, there will be a rich program of cultural and entertainment events, including the Miri Divisional Multi-Ethnic School Dance Competition, "Walk with Love" Sarawak Chinese Charity Night, indigenous cultural performances, the "Voice of Borneo" singing competition, Rhythm and Warriors Night, Indigenous Cultures Night, drum shows, the Miss Borneo beauty pageant, and the Miri Inter-School 3R Environmental Fashion Design and Fashion Show.
Among these, the "Borneo Cultural Dance Showcase" (Seni Budaya Tarian Borneo), held on July 3rd, will be one of the main highlights.
This event will gather traditional dance troupes from Sarawak, Sabah, Brunei, Indonesia, and Yunnan, China for a joint performance, further consolidating the carnival’s status as a key platform for regional cultural exchange.
The showcase will be officiated by Datuk Seri Abang Karim Rahman Hamzah, Minister for Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts, and Minister for Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development.
The official opening ceremony of the carnival will take place on July 4th, presided over by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
The opening ceremony will also witness the signing of a friendly cooperation agreement between the "Taste of Borneo Cultural Carnival" and the Yunnan Ethnic Association, as well as the signing of a sister city memorandum of understanding between Miri City Council and the Lijiang Municipal Government of China.
The organizers stated that these agreements symbolize an important step toward enhancing cultural ties and international cooperation through people-to-people exchanges.
The organizers also welcome the public to participate enthusiastically in the 12-day carnival, to personally experience Borneo's rich and colorful cuisine, cultural performances, and traditional customs, and to enjoy the unique charm of the region’s multiculturalism.
