(Bandar Seri Begawan, 17th) The Department of Fisheries under the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism of Brunei recently collaborated with Oceanic Quest Sdn Bhd to successfully remove an abandoned fishing net weighing 22.5kg from the well-known diving site "Dolphin Wreck". The operation was carried out based on two independent reports submitted by the company.
The Department of Fisheries stated in a statement that "Dolphin Wreck" is one of the most popular local dive sites, attracting not only diving enthusiasts but also serving as a crucial habitat for various fish and marine life. The abandoned fishing net found this time belongs to the category of "Abandoned, Lost, or Discarded Fishing Gear (ALDFG)", posing a potential threat to marine ecosystems.
The department noted that this is not the first time abandoned fishing nets have been removed from local dive sites. Similar clean-up efforts have previously been carried out in other areas, aiming to protect marine life, maintain fishery resources, and ensure the safety of diving activities.
This ongoing removal effort demonstrates the Department of Fisheries’ firm commitment to sustaining marine ecosystems and effectively addresses the growing problem of ALDFG, ensuring the sustainable development of marine resources.
