(Miri, 8th) Sarawak Minister of Transport, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, stated that the greatest treasure of Sarawak society is the harmonious coexistence, mutual respect, and cooperation among its various ethnic groups, which together form a uniquely multicultural and integrated environment. This is a crucial foundation for national prosperity, stability, and a peaceful life.

He said that the people of Sarawak live in a blissful social environment, with Chinese New Year celebrations starting even before the festival itself and the festive atmosphere often lasting up to two months, fully demonstrating the spirit of different ethnic groups respecting each other and celebrating together.

He cited examples such as people from various ethnic groups dining together and co-running businesses in Sarawak’s coffee shops, reflecting unity. The case of the Lutong Mosque and a Christian church sharing a parking lot further highlights the precious values of mutual respect, cooperation, and coordination. He hopes people of all ethnicities will continue to strengthen ethnic harmony and work together to promote the nation’s prosperity and development.

Lee Kim Shin said this during his speech last night at the ‘Galloping Horse Promoting Our Future Together’ 2026 Year of the Horse Spring Festival Gala Dinner organized by the Tuk Bah Chinese School, held on the 5th floor of Miri Imperial Palace Hotel.

He pointed out that Tuk Bah Chinese School will mark its 80th anniversary this year, an important milestone. All teachers, students, and members of society should remember the source while drinking, acknowledging the hard work and contributions of their predecessors, and continue to carry forward the excellent spirit of the school.

He mentioned that for many years, Tuk Bah Chinese School has excelled in various sectors in Miri due to the tireless efforts of the board and school leadership, continuously improving the level of education, and expressed gratitude for the dedication and teamwork of the teaching staff.

He emphasized that he has always attached great importance to education, believing that education is the key to success. For a person to progress, education is essential; no matter how poor or difficult life becomes, “education must not be neglected,” as education can change lives and is fundamental to social advancement. Only through education can individuals and society create a better future.

When speaking of disadvantaged groups, he stressed that society should pay special attention to students facing financial difficulties, helping them complete their studies through various forms of assistance. He cited the example of establishing single-mother organizations to help children pursue further studies, demonstrating the important role of social care in education.

He also noted that society’s demand for technical and skilled talents is increasing, encouraging students to not only possess academic foundations but also develop professional and practical skills, thereby exploring more diverse paths for their future.

Addressing the challenges brought on by the era of artificial intelligence, Lee Kim Shin said the Sarawak government is actively promoting digital economic development. Teachers, too, need to keep up with the times, strengthen their training and learning to avoid falling behind in the technological wave. He also agreed with the school’s proposals for study tours and exchanges, believing that the board can take the lead in helping teachers broaden their horizons through external exchange and learning, further raising teaching standards.
