(Vientiane, 1st) The Lao Government has officially launched a nationwide digital citizen ID card and management system, marking a new milestone in the country’s path toward comprehensive digital governance. The project was completed with the full assistance of the Vietnamese government and is an important achievement in deepening bilateral cooperation between Laos and Vietnam.

The launch ceremony was held in a grand fashion this Wednesday, co-chaired by Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Security, General Vilay Lakhamfong, and Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Public Security, General Luong Tam Quang. Senior officials from the public security ministries of both countries also attended the ceremony and pressed the button together to launch the system.

Lao Deputy Minister of Public Security, Lieutenant General Khamking Phuilamanyvong, emphasized in his speech that establishing a unified citizen database is a key foundation for driving digital governance at both central and local levels, and will help enhance national administrative efficiency and public security standards.

“This system is an important component for Laos to realize its vision of a digital government, digital economy, and digital society,” he said.

Although authorities have not yet released detailed information about the system’s functionalities, it is widely believed that the digital ID card system will greatly simplify the identity authentication process, strengthen government control over population data, and improve the country’s social security capabilities.

The Lao Ministry of Public Security especially thanked the Vietnamese government and its Ministry of Public Security for their comprehensive support in technology, manpower, and funding, which enabled the smooth implementation of the project.

This move not only enhances Laos’s governance capacity, but also deepens the special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between the two countries’ parties, states, peoples, and security forces.

“This cooperation will continue to deepen our friendship and play a key role in crime prevention and control, as well as safeguarding national peace and stability,” Lieutenant General Khamking said.

It is understood that the funding and technical support for this project came mainly from the Vietnamese government and its Ministry of Public Security, representing one of the important steps of Vietnam’s assistance to Laos in promoting digital transformation.
