Myanmar's military government ended the national state of emergency on Thursday to prepare for elections at the end of the year.
According to AFP, military government spokesman Zaw Min Tun said in a voice message sent to reporters on the 31st: “The state of emergency is lifted today so that the country can hold elections and move toward the path of multi-party democracy.”
He added: “The election will be held within six months.”
According to Myanmar television station MRTV, the military government has not yet announced an election date. Min Aung Hlaing will continue to serve as the highest leader of the military government, managing the country and supervising the election process.
On Wednesday, Min Aung Hlaing confirmed that the planned election would be held in December this year. This will be the first nationwide election since the 2021 coup in Myanmar triggered civil war and plunged the Southeast Asian country into chaos.
