Cambodia has called on Thailand to release Cambodian soldiers captured after a ceasefire agreement came into effect.
Cambodian Ministry of Defense spokesperson Meas Sokcheata stated on the 31st that at 7:30 a.m. on the 29th, Thai soldiers took control of 21 Cambodian soldiers.
She said that so far, Cambodia has received the body of one fallen soldier. "We urge the Thai side to promptly repatriate all 20 soldiers to Cambodia, as well as any other personnel who may be under Thai control."
However, on the 31st, the Thai Army stated that Thailand's handling of the detained Cambodian soldiers complies with international law and that the soldiers will be returned to Cambodia once all relevant legal procedures have been completed.
With the mediation of Malaysia, the current rotating chair of ASEAN, Cambodia and Thailand held talks in Putrajaya on the 28th and agreed to an "immediate and unconditional" ceasefire starting at midnight that day, ending several days of border conflict between the two countries.
