(Kuching, 6th) SACOFA’s Network Modernisation Programme, costing RM185 million, has achieved 50% progress, with 365 out of 732 telecommunication sites already upgraded and put into operation, propelling Sarawak towards a more resilient digital backbone network.

Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi, Sarawak’s Minister for Utility and Telecommunications, stated during SACOFA’s 25th anniversary celebration dinner in Kuching on Wednesday (August 5th) that another 367 sites are still undergoing modernization, with the entire project expected to be completed as scheduled by 2027.

He said the progress made as of July 2026 reflects SACOFA’s ongoing commitment to building future-ready network infrastructure, to continue supporting Sarawak’s digital transformation.

The Network Modernisation Programme, which began in November 2025, utilizes advanced technologies such as Optical Transport Network, AI-driven intelligent network technology, and next-generation routing technology to strengthen Sarawak’s telecommunications infrastructure.

After completion, SACOFA’s total network capacity will rise from the current 1.6 terabits per second to 7.2 terabits per second, while the capacity of individual sites will increase from 10 gigabits per second to 100 gigabits per second.

Julaihi, who is also SACOFA Chairman, said this upgrade project will enhance network performance, stability, and scalability to meet the growing communication needs of Sarawak’s businesses, government service agencies, and communities.

“These enhancements are not just about increasing network connectivity, but about building a modern, resilient, and high-capacity telecommunications network to address the ever-growing demands of the digital economy and to ensure Sarawak remains competitive in an increasingly connected world,” he said.

He pointed out that SACOFA will continue to strengthen its role as Sarawak’s telecommunications infrastructure backbone by collaborating with industry partners, expanding network coverage, and supporting the development of next-generation technologies.
