(Kuching, 7th) The Sarawak SEDAR Party (SEDAR) has openly expressed support for PBB publicity chief Datuk Seri Abdul Karim, describing this senior minister as someone who can still contribute much to Sarawak and is capable of shouldering greater responsibilities.
In a statement, SEDAR pointed out that Abdul Karim's recent remarks on "all leaders should accept with an open mind the decisions made by their parties in light of the coming Sarawak state election" demonstrates that he remains one of the most valuable figures in Sarawak's political arena.
The statement noted that Abdul Karim has held multiple key positions in the Sarawak government. The experience he has gained across several strategic state cabinet departments means he possesses a broad and in-depth understanding of Sarawak's economic and social development, tourism, youth and sports, as well as other important sectors related to the people's welfare.
SEDAR also emphasized that Abdul Karim has always firmly upheld his views and principles, a leadership trait that is most needed today. The statement said that amid the globally challenging geopolitical and economic landscape, leaders must have the courage to make decisions, the commitment to safeguard the state's interests, and the ability to speak out for what is right for the people.
"Steadfast leadership built on experience, wisdom and a sense of responsibility can give the people and investors greater confidence in Sarawak's leadership, believing that the state is ready to face future challenges."
SEDAR believes that nurturing a new generation of leaders is indeed an important process for any political organization, but this does not mean that senior leaders who can still make significant contributions must step down.
"On the contrary, sustainable leadership succession should be built on a foundation where the experience and wisdom of senior leaders is combined with the ideals and dynamism of the younger generation."
Based on this, SEDAR believes that as Sarawak Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts as well as Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, and Asajaya State Assemblyman, Abdul Karim remains qualified, credible, and well positioned to continue playing a key role in Sarawak's political landscape; if necessary, he is also one of the candidates capable of shouldering even greater responsibility.
The statement noted that SEDAR hopes all political parties in making any decisions ahead of the state election will always put Sarawak's long-term interests first. The state not only needs a leadership team with vision, but also people who have experience, integrity, wisdom and courage to continue propelling the state forward in an increasingly dynamic domestic and international environment.
"Sarawak's future relies not only on renewal, but also on cherishing the wisdom that comes from experience. As long as a leader can still contribute to the state's development and the people’s welfare, they should continue to be allowed to serve."
On the 2nd of this month, Abdul Karim said that when the time comes, he is willing to make way for new leaders, emphasizing that politicians must accept the party’s decisions regarding the need for succession.
He said this after discussions with Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari, stating frankly that his own political service had reached a certain stage.
Speaking during an International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) alumni gathering, he added that regardless of how many terms one serves, all elected representatives must be prepared to step down when necessary.
He further stated that politicians should not hold onto a “must be me” mentality, and should not insist on running as independents after failing to receive party nominations.
