KUCHING,8: A local man’s attempt to smuggle over 10 kilograms of methamphetamine into Sarawak failed when he was apprehended at Kuching International Airport (KIA) on April 16.

According to Sarawak Customs Director Norizan Yahya, the incident occurred around noon when the suspect’s suspicious behavior was noticed upon his arrival from Kuala Lumpur.

“The suspect retrieved a box from the baggage carousel and quickly entered the restroom with it.

“The Malaysian Royal Customs Department (JKDM) Sarawak’s Passenger Special Inspection Unit (UKPP), monitoring the suspect’s movements, conducted a search and discovered 10 transparent plastic packages suspected to contain methamphetamine, commonly known as ‘ice,’ inside the box,” he said in a statement.

Norizan added that the seized drugs weighed approximately 10,136 grams with a market value of nearly RM347,200.

Initial investigations revealed that the syndicate had employed a tactic of hiding drugs alongside snacks in the box to evade detection by authorities.

“The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment, and whipping if convicted.

“We urge the public to provide information on smuggling activities, including cigarettes, alcohol, fireworks, drugs, and vehicles, to help authorities combat crimes that threaten national security and the economy.

“Any information can be reported via the Customs Department toll-free hotline at 1-800-88-8855, and the identity of informants will be kept strictly confidential,” he added.
