(Kuching, 15th) Sarawak is actively consolidating its position as a national sports hub, with plans for a velodrome progressing on schedule. At the same time, there are considerations to add BMX tracks and rugby facilities near the Sarawak Sports Complex as part of supporting infrastructure.
Datuk Seri Abdul Karim, Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development of Sarawak, stated that the proposed velodrome site covers an area of about 60 to 70 acres, adjacent to the existing Sarawak Sports Complex, making it convenient to create a comprehensive sports park.
He said: "Initially, the land was privately owned, which made things slightly complicated, but the issues have now basically been resolved. The site is highly suitable, and its proximity to the Sarawak Sports Complex will help make the entire area one of the largest sports zones in Malaysia." — He made these remarks during an interview with the media after the Sarawak Cycling Association (SCA) Awards Ceremony held on Sunday (December 14).
Abdul Karim pointed out that the velodrome project is expected to greatly boost interest and participation in competitive cycling, especially among young athletes.
He added that, as land is plentiful, there are plans for subsequent development such as building a BMX track next to the velodrome.
"Other sports, such as rugby, are also considered for facility setups in the area. We will further study the planning and construction of these facilities after the Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games)."
